Why can't cage raised Ringneck Pheasants live in Alabama woodlands?
I asked this very question of The Department of Natural Resources ( Fish and Game ) here in Indiana.
They said that cage raised birds will come from a line of birds which have been raised in protected environments for too many generations to retain their basic traits. Basically, they have lost their wild survival instincts.
I did a little research and found this to be true. There was a case of 1000 cage raised quail being released into the wild to supplement a winter-killed population. Virtually every quail was dead in less that 3 months. They simply don't know what to do to avoid foxes, hawks, dogs, cats, mink and all the other natural predators.
You have a noble idea, but it does not work in real life.
Sorry.
